Facial Nerve

Fact #1

The Facial Nerve is considered Cranial Nerve pair VII (#7). Remember, there are twelve pairs of cranial nerves (thus, 24 total).


Fact #2

The Facial Nerve has motor (movement) components that are responsible for movements of the face (e.g., smiling, pursing lips, lifting eyebrows, et cetera).


Fact #3

When a facial nerve is malfunctioning (functioning incorrectly in terms of motor/movement), it is often referred to as "nerve palsy".

“Palsy” means “paralysis.”


Fact #4

What are the signs and / or symptoms of facial nerve palsy?*

  • Facial muscle weakness in parts of or all of one side of one's face.
  • Facial muscle spasms.
  • Drooping eyebrow(s) and / or eyelid(s).
  • Trouble closing your eye(s) and / or blinking.
  • Dry eye(s) due to loss of tear production.
  • Decreased sound tolerance (hyperacusis) in ear (s).
  • Lopsided smile or facial appearance.
  • Unclear speech and / or slurred speech.
  • Difficulty eating and / or drinking.
  • Diminished taste and / or dry mouth.
  • Differently swallowing.
