Concept #1, What is it?
Text Neck Syndrome (TNS) is used to describe the damaging effects "due to repeated stress on the neck and spine when the head tilts forward and downward to look at a screen." Over time, this tends to cause poor neck and spine posture with pain and immobility commonly associated with it.
Concept #2, Etiology (causes / origins)
Tech Neck Syndrome is primarily caused by two maladaptive postures:
- Forward head position (too far forward)
- Tech neck position (downward)
*maladaptive refers to traits and / or behaviours that are more damaging than helpful
Concept #3, Signs & Symptoms
Wikipedia for 'Signs & Symptoms' says, "Signs and symptoms are diagnostic indications of an illness, injury, or condition. While signs are objective and externally observable, symptoms are a person's reported subjective experiences."
From the Medical News Today article, some of the symptoms listed are:
- neck pain
- shoulder pain
- headaches
- changes in posture
- reduced range of motion
- muscle stiffness
Concept #4, Complications
Complication comes from the word, complicate. 'Complicate' is defined as some thing that becomes worse, to make more complex.
**If those symptoms (listed above) are left untreated, several complications may occur:
- chronic pain
- nerve compression
- spinal misalignment
- muscle imbalances
- degenerative disc disease
